They hired someone from outside

You've been at the organization for four years.

You know the systems. You know the team. You know where the bodies are buried, metaphorically speaking. When the senior security role opened up, everyone assumed it would go to you.

It went to someone they found on LinkedIn.

The external hire had less industry experience. Less institutional knowledge. Less understanding of the specific environment they'd be walking into.

But they had CISSP. And you didn't.

This happens more than anyone wants to admit.

Hiring managers don't always make the best decision. They make the defensible decision. When they're justifying a hire to a board or an executive team, "they had CISSP" is a clean, unambiguous answer.

"They seemed really capable and the team liked them" is not.

Credentials give hiring managers cover. And that cover comes at your expense when you don't have them.

Here's what's particularly frustrating:

You probably know most of what CISSP covers already. Four years in a security role means you've dealt with access controls, incident response, risk management, and security architecture in practice.

But practical experience doesn't show up on a resume the same way a credential does. The hiring manager reviewing your application doesn't know what you've handled. They see what's on the page. And if the credential isn't there, you don't always get the chance to explain what is.

The credential doesn't prove you're better. It proves you're qualified.

And in a competitive hiring process, qualified is the threshold you need to clear before anyone starts evaluating whether you're actually the best candidate.

The person who got that role isn't doing the job better than you would have. They just cleared the threshold while you didn't.

If you don't want to be on the wrong side of that decision again:

Our next CISSP Bootcamps runs on July 13-17. Five days of intensive prep with John Berti and Rob Witcher who have trained security professionals at Deloitte, TD Bank, Scotiabank, and Target. A methodology that's gotten 93.6% of our students through on their first attempt.
