For ten years, anyone who knew where to look could access the real-time location of 2.15 million Toyota vehicles.

No hacking required. No stolen credentials. No sophisticated attack.

Just a cloud database with no password.

Toyota discovered the misconfiguration in April 2023, when an investigation into their T-Connect cloud service found that vehicle location data, in-vehicle terminal IDs, and video footage from onboard recorders had been publicly accessible since November 2013.

Ten years.

The cause: human error during cloud configuration. Someone set up the database wrong. Nobody checked. Nobody noticed. The data just sat there, accessible to anyone, for a decade.

This is what the shared responsibility model looks like in practice.

Toyota's cloud provider secured the infrastructure. The physical servers, the network, the hardware. All fine.

Toyota was responsible for everything above that. The database configuration. The access controls. The monitoring that would have caught the problem in 2014 instead of 2023.

They weren't hacked. They left the door open and didn't realize it for ten years.

When the investigation into the first misconfiguration concluded, Toyota kept looking. They found a second misconfigured database. Then a third, affecting customers outside Japan. Three separate cloud misconfigurations across the same environment, all sitting undetected for years.

The pattern isn't unusual.

Cloud misconfigurations were responsible for 23% of all cloud security incidents in 2025, and the average enterprise runs over 3,000 misconfigured cloud assets at any given time. Most of them go undetected for months. Some, apparently, for years. Cloudaware

The gap isn't usually in knowing that misconfiguration is a risk. It's in knowing what correct cloud configuration actually looks like across every service, every storage type, every access control layer, and every environment your organization runs.

That's the knowledge gap CCSP is built to close. Not just cloud security concepts, but what secure cloud configuration actually requires in practice: how access controls work differently in cloud environments, what monitoring needs to exist, and how to spot the gaps before a decade goes by.

We recently updated the CCSP MasterClass to match ISC2's latest exam outline, so everything you study maps directly to what the exam tests today. If you've been waiting for the right time to start, this is it.
